Start-Over Success Business Under $500 - Tutor

If you are a high school graduate, have a subject you are passionate about, and are a skillful teacher, tutoring may be a good choice for you.

With the pandemic, education was turned upside down and inside out. Parents and kids got used to distance learning.  Without good at-home schooling, many students fell behind. Parents were stretched to their limits, and beyond.

The challenges of education are at the surface, which makes for motivation to hire tutors.

How much to charge for Tutoring

What to charge is one of the most difficult part of any business and service.

Does this seem like a heavy tutoring schedule? I’ll share more ideas on tutoring and pricing later.

What Tutoring Subjects & Prices

A factor that goes into your pricing is the need for the subject you help with. Consider the economic situation of your prospective clients.

Make sure your skills are top notch and that you are entertaining, along with the education you provide.

Check Your States Requirements for Tutors.

Unless you have a college degree and teaching credential, you will not be able to teach at a school. No problem for a tutor!

You can work as an online tutor, go to student’s place, have students come to you, or work at a Tutoring Agency Center. An agency will probably require you to take classes and become certified. National Tutoring Association classes are around $160. With tutoring training you’ll get information you will use. $160 is not much to spend to get into a Tutoring Career.

Qualifications to Become a Tutor

To be a tutor you will need to be a high-school graduate. Obviously, you’ll need expertise in whatever subject(s) you teach.

If you are working on your own, you’ll need to  set your rates. (See above and below for more on pricing)

Most importantly, you’ll need to market yourself. You can learn to do everything it takes – and it takes time.

Also, you may want to get training and certification.  Even if it’s not required, it’ll help you be more competitive.

What Skills Does a Tutor Need?

If it were easy for students to learn with dry presentations of materials, they could just get a book. As we know, that doesn’t work.

Students have questions. They have different needs to take in the material so they can use it.

It’s your job as a tutor to Engage students and get them involved. This takes all the skills listed.

In addition to excellent teaching skills, you will need to perform business and marketing tasks.

How a Tutor Can Find Clients

People are aware of the need and value for tutoring. It doesn’t matter how much you are needed if they don’t know about you.

Get business cards made ($20) Let family and friends know about your work and ask them to share your cards with prospects. Get flyers made ($20) and put them at libraries, farmer’s markets, and anywhere else parents go where they allow flyers.

Where do parents in your area hang out on social media. Be there!

Get Students from a Tutoring Agency

There are thousands of Tutoring Agencies across the country. Each has it’s own specialty and market.

This can be a great way to start your tutoring work. But, you will make less money.

Odds are that an agency will expect you to take classes and tests and fulfill other requirements.

Freelance vs Tutor Agency?

If you work on your own, you will have plan your tutoring sessions.

You’ll be running your tutoring business. There are decisions for you to make about pricing, who you want as your students, will you offer free trial sessions? And more.

You’ll need to do the business admin tasks yourself.

All the marketing will be up to you.

The good news is you’ll learn to run a business. You may want to build a Tutoring Agency of your own!

You Get to Choose Your Best Life

Maybe you just want to work a few hours here and there. That’s fine.

But, if you’ve got it in you, there are steps you can take that can build your fortune, for you, your family, and your community.
