What Does Dog Walking involve?

Do walkers work out in the weather. It’s a lot of exercise.

It takes attention to make sure dogs and people are safe.

Dog walkers usually pick up dogs at their residences. Obviously, clients must be located near each other.

Dog sitters usually work at their homes so arrangements must be made for feeding, medications, crates, beds, toys, and more.

  • How can you make dog walking work for you?
  • What times of day will you provide walks?
  • Do you know or will you learn dog walking etiquette?
  • From what areas will you pick up dogs?
  • Will you learn about dog behavior?

Ryan says that the difficult part is when owners want to get messages while he is out walking. As he says, “If I’m texting you, I can’t be watching your dog. I will watch your dog.”

A Written Agreement stating your expectations and what clients can expect from you helps things run smoothly. You can send this in an email or text and ask clients to reply with the agreement. This has legal force.

What materials are helpful for running your dog walking business?

  • Dog walking bag to hold your stuff
  • Leashes and collars
  • Poop bags (bio-degradable are best)
  • Doggie treats (get approval)
  • Drinking water

Ryan uses an informal system on paper for scheduling and tracking appointments.

It might make more sense to use a system like QuickBooks.com or FreshBooks.com from the start. After all, this is a business you can start with very little money (just a business license, insurance, and a few doggie items), so maybe you can spend a little each month on one of these apps.

Make, print, and distribute flyers in the area you want to work in.

> Call local realtors, property management companies, restaurants, and other local businesses for referrals.

> Call other companies that provide at-home services about cross-marketing and/or swapping referrals: handymen, lawn care, and auto detailers. This is a win-win, plus builds your image in the community.

> Contact Senior Citizen Centers, community centers, country clubs, Homeowners Associations  to post your flyers.

> Most libraries have an area for flyers.

> Do an amazing job and ask for testimonials and referrals.

> Post in NextDoor.com for your area.

> Take pics of dogs while they’re in your care and send them to the dog’s owners. Woof!
